Chatterfiets

Here's a cute video I ran across on YouTube today that does a great job of showing how easy it is to communicate with your kids when hauling them in a Bakfiets. My son and I chatter away at each other constantly when we're out on the bike and he really enjoys pointing out things as we cruise around.

Excellent website. I'm jealous. I wish this site was here a year ago when I was drooling over bakfiets all the time...

Why isn't the child wearing a helmet? (Or the woman, for that matter, but she's and adult and can make her own decision.) Far be it from me to tell someone how to raise his kid, but children's skulls are not as hard as adults and even a little fall can do a lot of damage. I understand that, with the longer wheelbase, the BF is more stable than a standard bike, but still, not insisting on a helmet is irresponsible and borders on child endangerment.

This is a video I found on YouTube, this is not me and my family, so you'll have to take up the parents involved.

I totally agree with you and never leave the driveway without everyone (including myself) wearing helmets when taking my own cargobike out for a ride. Personally I could not live with myself if one of my children received a head injury simply as a result of my laziness in not insisting they wear one - their safety is my responsibility and helmets are a requirement for my family. The "freedom" of cycling without a helmet argument does not wash well if you have ever talked to a trauma nurse...

However, you'll find that many, if not most, Europeans, particularly the Dutch, have a more casual attitude about helmets. There is endless discussion of the helmet topic on other blogs like http://www.bikeportland.org if you search on "helmet", particularly where children are concerned. Todd Fahrner of http://www.cleverchimp.com has interesting things to say as well.
